RA Power Solutions has recently undertaken repair of the centre fuse rear casing machine block of a fertilizer plant in Northern India.

The problem of heavy leakage of oil was observed from the rear centre fuse casing. Our technicians visited the site and carried out the following jobs.

Action taken for repair of the damaged centre fuse, rear casing machine block by metal locking, metal stitching and metal surgery

  • We completely removed the paint and red oxide from the casing using a buffing process to expose cracks and weak areas in the casting.
  • Our qualified engineer conducted the Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) using a high-intensity Magnaflux torch and equipment manufactured by Magnaflux USA. This equipment helped us detect even minor cracks that were not visible to the naked eye.
  • We repeatedly carried out the MPI test in critical areas to ensure that we identified all possible cracks.
  • Because of the casing’s complex profile, we also performed a Dye Penetrant Test (DPT) as an additional crack-detection method. The inspection revealed a large area of weak casting along with multiple cracks of varying lengths and profiles.
  • We repaired the centre fuse rear casing machine block using the metal locking and metal stitching process. We used specially engineered alloy self-merging keys and locks to secure and repair the cracks.
  • We polished the repaired area using specialized equipment and restored the casing to its original shape and profile.
  • To prevent further oil leakage, we applied a specialized sealing chemical imported from our UK-based principals according to the recommended procedure.

After completing the repair, we recommissioned the plant and found no further oil leakage.

FAQs:

1. What is metal stitching in cast iron repair?

Metal stitching is a cold repair process that restores cracked or damaged cast iron components by mechanically joining and sealing them without using heat or welding.

2. How does metal locking differ from metal stitching?

Metal locking adds reinforcement by embedding strong metal locks or inserts that cross the crack, increasing structural integrity and preventing further crack propagation.

3. Why is metal stitching better than welding for cast iron?

Welding applies heat that can distort the casting and cause new cracks due to thermal stress. In contrast, metal stitching is a cold process.

4. Can RA Power Solutions repair cracked castings onsite?

Yes, RA Power Solutions performs onsite repairs of cracked castings using metal stitching and metal locking processes, eliminating the need for disassembly or transportation.

5. What components can be repaired using metal stitching and metal locking?

RA Power Solutions repairs various components, including engine blocks, cylinder heads, turbine casings, gearbox housings, pump casings, and compressor crankcases, among others.
