RA Power Solutions was advised about an accident with the auxiliary engine Yanmar 6M220L-SN (A/E#01) by a Greece-based company whom we have been serving for the last 15 years.

A team of two technicians was sent on board the vessel and the following main observation was made:

  • Counterweight bolts sheared off, and the engine block got damaged by the counterweights.

  • The impact was so high that multiple cracks were observed on both sides of the engine block, measuring more than 122 inches.

The scope of work included the following:

  • Removal of a portion of the engine block having multiple cracks by cutting and replacing it with new casting.

  • Repair of cracks by metal stitching and metal locking

  • Removal of counterweight bolts from the crank web.

  • Grinding of 1 no. CR pin which got damaged due to hitting of counterweights.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions

  • The entire damaged area of the engine block was metal stitched and the area having the multiple cracks was replaced by new casting.

  • The damaged counterweight bolts were removed and re-tapping was done.

  • Grinding of the crankpin was undertaken to the second step size of 0.8 mm.

The metal stitching and metal locking was done while the sailing of the vessel. Even the grinding and polishing of the crankpin to the undersize of 0.8 mm was done while the vessel was moving.
